The
JuJu Club is now based at "The Boardwalk and has been
pumping out 'live' world music in Sheffield for the last eleven
years.
Started by a collective of friends in the snowy winter of 1989 it
has always been about creating a welcoming party atmosphere that
makes us want to dance.
We still have a non-commercial vibe, we are now running as a not-for-profit
organisation and going for charitable status.
Over
the years JuJu has been held in different venues around Sheffield.
For a long time we where at the popular Crookes Workingmens
Club, where we also fought a long and finally successful battle
to win equal rights in the club for women.
The
JuJu Clubs 200 live promotions have spanned the full range
of global music featuring artists like Hugh Masekela, Kanda Bongo
Man, Misty & Roots, Fundamental, Jesus Alemany, Roberto Pla,
Mouth Music, Shooglenifty and all points, north, south, east and
west.
As
well as promoting our own gigs, we have put energy into building
up networks of promoters, particularly in the North of England and
have supported regionally based world music and roots bands.
We
have recently been given lottery grant and we are looking to raise
the profile of world music in the region as well as move into production,
putting out original and remixed global sounds on our own label.
The
JuJu team are also partners in Headcharge a very successful monthly
all-nighter with two rooms playing acid techno trance in one and
dub, reggae, drum and bass and break beat in the other.
The
two nights occasionally meet; the JuJu/Headcharge nights feature
DJs and bands who combine heavier dance beats with global influences.
We
are now busy programming for the rest of the year, planning more
JuJu, JuJu/Headcharge and Headcharge
nights. We'll also be busy over the summer working with local festivals
in Sheffield and trying hard to get our foot in the door at Glastonbury. |
